Mt. Titlis - an unforgettable experience at 10,000 feet above sea level!

Good to Know: I traveled to Mt. Titlis with my husband and our children, aged 18 months and 4 years, during the summer in August. This puts me in a great position to give you a thorough idea of how our visit went with the kids—covering safety, family-friendly activities, and everything in between.

Mount Titlis, standing tall at 3,239 meters, is the true celebrity of the Swiss Alps, and Bollywood has played a big part in its fame! Nestled near the picturesque Engelberg resort, about 35 km (22 miles) south of Lucerne, you can easily make your way to the summit. Just hop on a gondola from Engelberg to Stand and then take a swirling cable car ride up to the top. It's an adventure you won't want to miss!

How To Get There?

Getting there is a breeze! The journey from Engelberg to Titlis takes around 30 minutes. If you’re coming from Lucerne, it’s about 45 minutes, and from Zurich, expect a journey of over 1.5 hours.

Pro Tip: At the summit, there’s a spacious terrace area, making it wheelchair accessible, so everyone can enjoy the stunning views!

When is the Best Time To Visit?

Just after the peak of Covid, we decided to visit Switzerland. The country had just reopened its tourism markets after a challenging period for its economy, so they were eager to provide the best experiences possible. With India and China still under strict lockdowns, there were no tourists from these countries, making it the perfect time for us to explore. We visited Mount Titlis and, with the absence of the usual crowds, we felt like we had the place to ourselves, surrounded by its majestic landscapes. There were fewer than 50 people at the top, which made the experience even more surreal.

Today, with tourism in Switzerland booming and having reached new heights post-Covid, it's much harder to enjoy such serene experiences. A few years ago, July and August were the ideal months for a Swiss adventure. However, with recent summer temperatures soaring above 40 degrees Celsius, it has become less pleasant to explore the country’s breathtaking landscapes. Despite the heat, Mount Titlis remains a delight in the summer, where you can comfortably enjoy the experience. For a more enjoyable trip that includes other parts of Switzerland along with your Mt. Titlis experience, I highly recommend visiting during the spring months of April and May or the autumn months of October and November.

  • Timings: The cable cars from Engelberg to Titlis operate continuously during opening hours, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with no fixed schedule.

  • Duration: We recommend setting aside 5-8 hours for a full day at Mt. Titlis.

To make the most of your visit without the long waits, I highly recommend using GetYourGuide skip-the-line tickets to bypass the crowds and enjoy your trip more smoothly.

What to Wear?

At the lower altitudes of Titlis Mountain, like at the Trübsee Schmuggler Spielplatz, dressing in layers and a light jacket should keep you comfortable. As you ascend higher, your clothing needs might change depending on the season. When we visited during summer, a thermal top, a light cardigan, and snow boots were perfect. Snow boots are essential because you’ll be walking on snow most of the time, which can get slippery. For other seasons, it’s best to gear up with full winter attire, including gloves, mittens, thermal wear, beanies, winter jackets, scarves, winter socks, and, of course, snow boots.

Parking, Tickets, and Tasty Treats

Just 100 meters from the entrance to Mt. Titlis, there’s a spacious parking area where you can conveniently park your car. You can pick up your tickets at the nearby counter or, to make things even smoother, book them in advance on GetYourGuide. We arrived really early, right when the gates opened, and were fortunate to find no crowds around.

Insider Tip: When booking online, be sure to compare Mt. Titlis ticket prices on the GetYourGuide website (availability may vary seasonally). Usually, prices match those on the official site, but occasionally you'll find exclusive seasonal discounts here. Booking with GetYourGuide also offers the perk of free cancellation up to 24 hours before your visit.

Important Reminder: Keep your ticket with you all day as you'll need to scan it multiple times. Pay attention to the specified times and don't miss the last cable car back to Engelberg. Asking for an extra round could cost you dearly!

Inclusions:

  • Ride on the TITLIS Rotair, the world’s first revolving cable car.

  • Access to the Ice Flyer glacier chairlift, taking you up to 3,000 meters.

  • Entry to the TITLIS Cliff Walk, Europe’s highest suspension bridge.

  • Visit to the Glacier Cave.

  • Use of snow toys at the TITLIS Glacier Park.

Pro Tip: If you have a Swiss Travel Pass, you not only enjoy discounted fares but also receive free tickets for your children to visit Mt. Titlis. Similar to a family card, this benefit is included in the cost of your Swiss Pass.

Right next to the ticket counter, there’s a cozy restaurant that pleasantly surprised us with a menu featuring Punjabi samosas and butter chicken—a delightful nod to the many Indian tourists who visit Mt. Titlis.

The logistics were pretty well arranged. So we just have to wait in a small queue before it was our time to get into the gondola to the middle station, where Trubsee and the snow park (only in winter) is located. As you ascend, you’re treated to stunning landscapes, the charming town of Engelberg below, and the lush green meadows of the Titlis mountain.

Trübsee Schmuggler Spielplatz

When you ride the cable car or gondola to Mt.Titlis, get off at the first station at 1,800 meters above sea level. The quick ride up on the Engelberg-Trübsee gondola lift treated us to stunning views, and once there, we spent a delightful hour on the adventure trail and playground. This is the Trübsee plateau which is a fantastic spot for families and nature lovers alike. We had a blast exploring the themed playground with the kids. Our kids loved everything from the Smuggler’s tower to the rope bridges and the exciting Schmuggli net swing. We even zipped down the Trübsee-Flyer and rented rowing boats to cap off a perfect day on the lake.

TITLIS Rotair, the world's first revolving gondola.

From the middle gondola station, change gondola to a revolving one. The gondola ride was an unforgettable experience. It’s the world’s first revolving cable car! It transports you to the Titlis mountain station, home to the glacier cave, glacier park (only in summer), Ice-Flyer chairlift, and the Titlis Sky Walk.

A Bollywood Welcome at Mt. Titlis

When we stepped off the rotair at Mt. Titlis mountain station, we were greeted by a cutout of Indian movie stars Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol from the iconic film "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" (DDLJ). This tribute is likely there because part of the beloved movie was filmed at this location, celebrating its success and connection to the area.

Don't miss the viewing platform, Ice Flyer chairlift

Experience the thrill of gliding safely and smoothly over a glacier on the Ice Flyer glacier chair lift. You’ll soar above massive snow fields shimmering in the sunlight, with breathtaking views straight down into the turquoise-blue depths of crevasses, plunging into the heart of the eternal ice. This adventure gives you access to Glacier Park (open only in summer), a fun-filled destination for both young and old.

Keep in mind, though, that a standard Mt. Titlis ticket doesn’t include the Ice Flyer—it requires an additional fee.

Walk across the Titlis Cliff Walk, Europe’s highest suspension bridge at 3,000 meters

Ever Walked on a Suspension Bridge at 3000 Metres (10,000 feet)? Experience the Titlis Sky Walk! Stretching 100 metres long and just one metre wide, it's a once-in-a-lifetime thrill! This sky-high marvel is Europe’s highest suspension bridge, dethroning the former champ, Salbit Bridge—also a Swiss wonder! It sways a bit, nothing too intense. Not recommended for those with vertigo though. Below your feet is just a wire mesh separating you from the jaw-dropping mountainous drop. The peak views from here are simply majestic. Descend via a spiraling staircase to the glacier cave exit, or head to the Ice Flyer chairlift station at the other end—north wall to the top station of the Ice Flyer glacier chairlift.

Glacier Cave

If you've never explored an ice tunnel before, visiting the Titlis Glacier Cave remains a unique and memorable experience. However, if you've seen other ice tunnels like those at Zermatt or at the Rhone Glacier, you might find this one less extraordinary. Nevertheless, it's still worthwhile to visit and experience the Titlis Glacier Cave. It remains a fun activity, especially for kids who enjoy exploring the ice sculptures inside.

Exploring the Titlis Glacier Cave
Exploring the Titlis Glacier Cave

Located deep under the glacier, the Titlis Glacier Cave stretches 150 meters in length. It maintains a chilly temperature just below freezing year-round, so it's essential to wear sturdy shoes and warm clothing to stay comfortable and safe on your visit. The ice above the cave ranges from 3 to 20 meters thick, with some ice formations dating back up to 5000 years—an astonishing fact! Each year, the experience inside the Titlis Glacier Cave varies. Sometimes, you'll encounter intricate ice sculptures or colorful lighting displays.

You can easily book your tickets on GetYourGuide to avoid long queues, with transportation arranged to and from your destination. Here are three options for you to choose from.

With its easy accessibility, family-friendly activities, and stunning landscapes, Mt. Titlis offers something for everyone.
