So many people had been stunned by the prospect of us travelling with young kids to Kashmir. Let me inform you that my son was little over 3 years and my daughter was just 4 months old when we made this awesome trip of our lifetime ! Few of them awed at our brave-heartedness, while few of them were left concerned with our foolishness. Few of them questioned our preparedness for these trips with kids, while few of them took inspiration from our commitment towards it. However largely, we summed their opinions up alright and that meant we wouldn't have it any other way. Travelling with kids is what completes us and we are here to stay ! So, after this prologue, here I'd like to start my conversation with you, highlighting the best parts of our vacation.

Kashmir - Where do I even begin? This unparalleled beauty, its ruggedness, its rawness, its mesmerising jaw dropping nature views, stunning landscapes, plethora of majestic snow clad mountains and mouth-watering food makes for its nomenclature ' Heaven on Earth!' It's a shame that it's often dubbed the Switzerland of India because Kashmir stands on its own, with unique natural magnificence and simplistic, unimaginable beauty that can't be compared to anywhere else on earth. Kashmir, situated in the northwestern Indian subcontinent, is a region of wonders waiting to be explored. What's even better is that it's incredibly safe for kids and there are so many family-friendly activities and attractions in Kashmir for kids. Read on.

How to Reach Kashmir?

✈️ To reach Kashmir, you have several options. If you prefer flying, book a flight to Srinagar International Airport (SXR) from major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. It's not really a big stop for international flights. Usually, if you're coming to Kashmir from abroad, you'd first fly into big Indian cities like Delhi or Mumbai, and from there catch a domestic flight to Srinagar. BOOK YOUR FLIGHTS HERE.

🚖You may convenienty book your pick up and drop off from the airport or airport taxis here using EASY AIRPORT TAXIS BOOKINGS.

🚆If you're traveling by train, the nearest railway station is Jammu Tawi (JAT). From there, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to Kashmir.

🚌Buses also offer a convenient way to reach Kashmir, with routes from Jammu that include stops at Patnitop, Pahalgam, and Gulmarg. You can also book a bus directly to Srinagar from major cities in North India.

🚗For the convenience of exploring the various sites around Kashmir, it's advisable to hire a car with a driver. However, you can also opt to rent a car, which can be easily arranged by BOOKING HERE.

Where to Stay?

Houseboats are a craze in Kashmir. Never did I imagine how royal it would feel to be staying a night in a houseboat. The reason why I haven't yet experienced staying in a houseboat in Rotterdam is because this experience in a houseboat on Dal Lake spoilt it for us for life!

With its truly enchanting wood interiors and Persian carpeted floors, Mughal styled decor, divans, and cutlery, the feel just hits right to end your trip with this high. Obviously there are thousands of houseboats in the Dal Lake and of differing luxury levels that suit your budget, ranging from anywhere between a Rs. 1100/- to Rs. 20,000/-. A very luxurious classy houseboat will cost you above Rs. 9000/-. One important thing to get expectations clear are that these aren't the floating houseboats, but these are fixed.

Highly recommended - Heritage Amina Group of Houseboats and HB Zaindari Palace

  • You'll find cozy guesthouses and hotels scattered across Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam, and Sonamarg. Popular options include The Lalit Grand Palace Srinagar, Vivanta Dal View, Welcomhotel by ITC Hotels, Pine N Peak in Pahalgam, and The Khyber Himalayan Resort & Spa.

  • For more budget-friendly yet excellent accommodations, consider Srinagar Group Of Hotels, ARCO Hotels and Resorts in Srinagar, or Hotel Tranquil Retreat in Sonamarg.

When is the best time to Visit?

Spring and Summer are the best seasons to visit Kashmir valley. However lately people are also visiting Kashmir to experience its splendid sceenry during its biting cold winters.

What to Wear?

In summer, lightweight cotton clothes are perfect, but bring a light jacket for cooler evenings. In winter, pack heavy woolens, thermals, gloves, and a quality jacket, plus snow boots and waterproof shoes. For spring and autumn, layering with medium-weight clothes and a warm jacket is best. Note that women generally dress modestly in Kashmir.

Top Sights to Explore

Normally the first day of our vacation is always settling in into the new place, trying to gauge our comfort with the weather, the surroundings, exploring the food options, and most importantly getting hold of a tourist map. However, with this place, the moment we set foot in Srinagar, I knew that along with the gorgeous surroundings and hospitable people, it's the changing play of the seasons and the salubrious climate that ensures that the city is attractive to visitors around the year.

1. Tulip Gardens

A special mention to the The Indira Gandhi Tulip Garden which is Asia’s largest tulip garden. It is nestled between Dal Lake and the Zabarwan hills. The garden which opened to public on March 19, 2023 has already entered the world record of housing over 1.5 million flowers of 68 different varieties. Children can indulge in fun activities like picnicking, flying kites, or simply running through the colourful fields (although they take care not to damage the plants and disturb the privacy of others). It's a delightful playground of nature that offers a visually stimulating experience for kids to enjoy and explore.

Helpful Tip: Unlike the tulip gardens in the Netherlands, which last for 55 days, the tulip gardens in Kashmir are only in bloom for 20 days. So, make sure to plan your visit accordingly!

2. Visit the 4 royal Mughal Gardens

Everyone is aware that Shah Jahan took garden architecture to new heights with the Taj Mahal in Agra, but let's focus on the beautiful Mughal Gardens in Kashmir, the Mughal summer capital. The Mughal Gardens in Srinagar, built during the Mughal Empire, were heavily influenced by Persian Gardens. These gardens feature rectilinear layouts, canals, fountains, and a variety of trees and flowers.

There are 6 gardens in total which are famed and celebrated Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, Chashme Shahi, Pari Mahal, Achabal Bagh and Verinag. These Mughal gardens are UNESCO World Heritage Centres. Nishat Bagh is known for its stunning terraces and panoramic views of Dal Lake, Shalimar Bagh features elaborate fountains and was a favorite of Emperor Jahangir, Chashma Shahi boasts a pristine natural spring, Pari Mahal offers breathtaking views from its hilltop location, Achabal is renowned for its ancient chinar trees and Mughal pavilions, and Verinag is famous for its beautiful spring and lush surroundings.

For a deeper understanding of the history and to truly appreciate the splendour of these Mughal Gardens, Please check this Link.

Timings: Open All Days except Fridays from 9 AM to 7 PM.

3. Spot a Hangul in a safari jeep ride in Dachigam National Park

Why would we go to a National Park in Kashmir? What if I told you that the National Park is home to the critically endangered and pretty rare Hangul or the Kashmir stag? And an adventurous safari jeep ride spotting many other exotic animals too like the musk deer, leopard, leopard cat, Himalayan Black Bear, yellow-throated marten, Himalayan Grey Langur among others? Still doesn't peak your interest? What about a trek with a local guide through the green grasslands and flowered carpets of the forest, stopping by channels of water flowing in between the forest area, and onto short rocky lands? Dachigam National Park, just 22 km from Srinagar, offers all this and more – definitely a must-do adventure!

Only one booking is allowed per day and you need a permit from the chief warden to visit the park. Moreover, since there are no restaurants or eateries in the park, it would be advisable to carry food packs with you.

More information and booking details are found on the link Dachigam National Park.

Timings: Open from Wednesday to Monday from 9 AM to 5 PM.

Helpful Tip:

  • To experience Dachigam National Park, you must apply for permission online, with only one booking permitted per day for groups of up to 15 individuals.

  • For foreigners, it's mandatory to upload a copy of their passport.

  • Please note, the park is closed every Tuesday.

4. Ride a horse to Thajiwas Glacier or Trek to the mountain peaks in Sonamarg.

Sonamarg is located 84 kilometers away from Srinagar, which takes approximately 2.5 hours by road. For the best experience, it's advisable to depart from Srinagar early in the morning, preferably after a hearty breakfast. Often referred to as 'The Meadow of Gold,' Sonamarg sits at an elevation of 2730 meters, boasting stunning views of snow-capped mountains against a vivid blue sky. Kids can delight in horseback rides to Thajiwas Glacier or engage in family-friendly mountain treks. During our visit, Kiu and I had an exhilarating time sledging down the snow-covered hills repeatedly. This adventurous experience with children creates unforgettable memories amidst the awe-inspiring natural beauty of Kashmir. Best time to visit is April to October.

  • We chose to visit the Thajiwas Glacier which is an unmatched exotic beauty with snow clad mountains, unassuming frozen lakes, tall-standing pine trees, extravagant waterfalls and small streams. It is situated 3000m above sea level covered in snow all through the year.

  • Ponies can be hired for the trip up to Thajiwas Glacier. It is a major local attraction during the summer months and is referred to as the hidden jewel of Kashmir. Pony rides can cost Rs.500/- or less in off-season (Feb-Mar) and can even go as high as Rs.1500/- in peak season (May-July). This definitely depends on your bargaining skills.

  • If you enjoy trekking or camping, Sonamarg is the place to be ! There are plenty of trekking trails in and around the town of Sonamarg, so you can plan your trekking routes to scale the popular peaks of Machoi, Sirbal, Amarnath and/or Kolahoi in Sonamarg.

5. Doodhpathri - Valley of Milk

This nature's masterpiece – Doodhpathri is situated at an altitude of 2730m above sea level in the south-west of Kashmir valley. Lofty mountains, velvet-like green meadows, sky touching trees, crystal-clear water and life-giving air all make Doodhpathri an unmatched and unparalleled tourist destination. Locally, it is called Dodh-E-Pather, and the name translates to ‘Valley of Milk’ .

Legend has it that the renowned Kashmiri saint Sheikh ul Aalam Sheikh Noor din Noorani once prayed in this area. During his search for water in the meadows, he struck the ground with his stick, and to his surprise, milk gushed out. This miraculous event led to the naming of this place as ‘Doodhpathri’, which translates to the valley of milk. It's also known as a 'Valley of Milk' due to its abundant production of rich milk.

6. Pahalgam - Valley of Shepherds

Pahalgam, also popularly known as the “Valley of Shepherds” is situated at the confluence of the streams flowing from Sheshnag Lake and the Lidder River. Pahalgam (2,130 m) was once a humble shepherd's Village with breathtaking views. Now it is Kashmir's premier resort, cool even during the height of summer when the maximum temperature does not exceed 25 degrees celsius. You have to check out Pahalgam's local markets – it's such a charming shopping experience. And when the sun starts to set, grab a cup of authentic Kashmiri kahwa by the gentle Lidder River. It's the perfect way to soak in the local culture.

Here you can ride a pony to the valley in case you don't want to trek it up. And once you reach the valley, there is a zip line activity for kids right there.

7. Pony ride to Mini-Switzerland (Baisaran)

Baisaran Valley is located 5 kilometers away from Pahalgam in the Anantnag district of Kashmir. An hour long pony ride through a rough and rocky terrain will lead you to a flat land of beautiful pinewoods known among tourists as Mini-Switzerland (Baisaran).

You can enjoy various activities like ziplining, zorbing, pony ride, horse ride in Baisaran or you could also enjoy the quiet and peace in the hilltop green meadow with a hot steaming chai from one of the local vendors situated there.

8. Sing a song of Betaab movie in the Betaab valley

Betaab valley gained prominence and rose to fame after the Sunny Deol-Amrita Singh starrer hit debut Bollywood movie Betaab, which released in 1983. Originally called as Hajan Valley or Hagan Valley, the valley is located 15 kms from Pahalgam in the Anantnag district of Jammu & Kashmir. It is known for its picturesque setting and serves as a base camp for trekking.

The famous song Jab Hum Jawan Honge from the Bollywood movie 'Betaab' was filmed in the picturesque Betaab Valley in Kashmir. Enjoy singing along with your kids in the beautiful Betaab Valley!

9. Gondola cable car ride in Gulmarg

Gulmarg is known for being the best ski restoration destination in India. Gulmarg is the highest lift-served ski resort in the world providing a downhill ski run of 5.2 km from a height of 14,000 ft (approx. 4000 metres) in the Apharwat range.

It is also the longest gondola served ski-lift in Asia, and the second longest and second highest cable car in the world. This was one of the most adventurous activities we did in Kashmir with our young children. It is deemed safe to go to the second stage with kids, although infants and senior citizens might show symptoms of altitude sickness as the air up high in the Himalayas is a bit thin. We were cautious to head back in case we noticed any symptoms in our kids, however all went well and we managed to stay up in the second stage for almost 1.5hours enjoying the view of densely snow clad meadows, peaks, fir and pine trees. More importantly, daddy and Kiu had a blast building snowmen and having snowball fights, while mumma stayed all cozy with her little Arya. A truly memorable winter wonderland experience.

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW:

  • The timing of the Gulmarg Gondola is from 10 AM to 5 PM.

  • Kindly note the winter months of November to January are extremely busy. You can get scammed to buy boots and gloves. There are VIP queues that get first priority. All said and done, this experience cannot be missed !

  • The price is Rs. 700/- (USD 11) for the first stage (from Gulmarg Resort to Kongdoori Station)

  • The price is Rs. 900/- (USD 15) for the second stage (from Kongdori to Mt. Apharwat). The Chairlift price is INR 300 (Mt. Apharwat to Mary's shoulder). It is by far one of the best ways to capture the views of the Nanga Parbat and Harmukh range.

Gulmarg is also known for its Mohinishwar Shivalaya Shiv Mandir (temple) which was made very popular in the famed song 'Jai Jai Shiv Shankar' featuring Rajesh Khanna and Mumtaz from the bollywood movie Aap Ki Kasam (1974). It was built in 1915 by Mohini Bai Sisodhi, the wife of Maharaja HariSingh ,the Dogra King of Jammu & Kashmir.

10. Sinthan Top

This was an impromptu plan. Sintan top wasn't part of our original itinerary but on the last day we decided to squeeze in this paradise and we're so glad that we made it happen. Sinthan top is a mountain pass located between Breng Valley in Anantnag district in South Kashmir and Kishtwar. You absolutely can't miss adding this mountain pass to your bucket list—it's like stepping into paradise!

PRO TIP: Our driver was even more enthusiastic in taking us to Sinthan Top. If it weren't for his passion for his Kashmir, it wouldn't have probably happened. That's why I urge you to always hire a local guide and driver and not some tour agency based out of Delhi or Mumbai to tour you around locally in Kashmir. Keep it local always!

This pass is closed for entry for about 6 months of the year, from about October/ November until March, so ideally the best time to visit should be between April and September. There are no hotels here so basically consider this as a day trip. You basically go here for the 360 degree views, the exhilaration that you derive from driving through these snow walled roads and for the Maggi noodles and chai when you get to the top!

11. Shikara Ride in the Dal Lake

To know how Dal lake's popularity is related to its strategic placement in terms of location, I'd like to give you a bit of a prelude. Srinagar is located in the heart of the Kashmir valley at an altitude of 1585 m (5200 feet) above sea level, spread on both sides of the river Jhelum. The Dal lakes enhance the picturesque setting of Srinagar by highlighting the majestic view of the mountains and surroundings. No wonder its known as the “Jewel in the crown of Kashmir”. A shikara ride in the Dal lake which costs approximately Rs. 770/- for 1 hour and continues to increase with the maximum of 3 hours. Its up to you to decide how to make this ride your most memorable one.

While cruising, you can take in the scenic beauty of Shalimar gardens and Nehru Park, or opt for serene moments gazing at the breathtaking mountain vistas or listening to the gentle flow of water, inducing a sense of tranquility. For a lively experience, explore the bustling floating market of the Dal Lake, where shopping feels like a thrilling adventure. Kids can feed vibrant fish, admire the floating gardens, and even attempt rowing a shikara boat—an unforgettable escapade for young adventurers! Whatever your choice, I assure you, this is an experience not to be missed when visiting Kashmir.

12. Kashmiri food to die for!

Kashmiri food is like a flavor festival, with spices performing a lively dance and saffron stealing the show! You got to try it to believe it!

  • Wazwan

We freaked out on some traditional Wazwan food. Wazwan is a special traditional feast in Kashmir, filled with delicious dishes like biryani, kebabs, and more. People in Kashmir enjoy it on important occasions, and it's a big part of their culture. We relished the curry and rice in true traditional fashion, savoring every bite with our hands, forgoing the need for utensils!

  • Saffron rice chicken biryani

Indulge in the aromatic delight of Kashmir's saffron-infused chicken biryani, a culinary masterpiece that tantalizes the taste buds. A rice dish filled with spices, warm, caramelized onions and fresh herbs.

  • Sheer Kurma

I have fond memories of enjoying this dessert during Eid celebrations in Mumbai, but the Sheer Kurma in Kashmir takes it to a whole new level. Sheer, which means milk in Persian, combined with khurma, meaning dates, creates a delightful treat that can be savored either hot or cold.

Other dishes to try out:

  • Dum Aloo - baby potatoes dunked in a rich yoghurt gravy

  • Kashmiri Rajma - red kidney beans cooked in a tomato and onion gravy

  • Naat Yakhni - mutton in a juicy onion yoghurt gravy with a dash of mawal flowers, mint leaves and kashmiri spices

  • Aab Gosht - melting lamb skin in gravy made of milk, cardamom and black pepper.

  • Nadir Monji - crunchy lotus stem fries

  • Kashmiri Saag - spinach cooked in mustard oil
